  5th Grade Class

August 2009

Dear Parents,

I hope you and your families had an amazing summer, and are ready for a brand new year at Rainbow Christian Academy! My name is Erin Oberle and I will be teaching fifth grade. This is my fifth year at Rainbow and I am very excited about all the potential it holds. God has blessed us with new technology in each classroom to enhance the learning opportunities and quality of education here at Rainbow. As you and I work together, we’ll create the best environment for academic success and spiritual growth for your child. God is constantly moving in my life and it is my prayer that He will be the guiding light for each of my students.

I firmly believe and feel truly blessed that God has placed me in this ministry. I come from a long line of teachers and a solid Christian upbringing, so teaching here is a real honor. I am a graduate of Florida International University. I have been a member of Faith Church of the Redlands for about ten years. I am actively involved in the children and food ministries there with my husband, Mr. Sean Oberle, who also teaches third grade here at Rainbow.

I am very excited to be working with fifth graders! I am eager to continue teaching them the building blocks of their life-long education as well as the foundation for spiritual growth with the knowledge of Jesus Christ as Savior. The next few paragraphs will give you a very brief overview of the material we will cover this month.

We will begin everyday with Bible time. First, we will review the salvation story of God sending His only son to die for our sins. We will continue with a series on the life of Moses and the Israelites. Bible memorization and singing songs of praise accompany all of the stories we learn. Please partner with me in prayer for your child every morning. We want the students to come in with open hearts and minds to what God would have them learn, as well as a reverent attitude of worship.

The Shurley English curriculum begins the year with organization skills and good study habits to help each student succeed academically. We will also review rules for capitalization and punctuation. The first novel we will read is The Talking Earth, which will reveal interesting aspects of Native American traditions in the setting of the very unique Everglades. We will map hurricanes, visit the Everglades, and enjoy other supplemental activities to learn about the rich culture of the Native Americans. Alongside the novels we will read this year, the students will be reading patriotic, creative, and historical short stories and poems.

We are taking Mathematics to a whole new level this year! Prentice Hall has an amazing interactive curriculum that we will use on-line in the classroom. Activities, instructional videos, vocabulary support, and instant feedback assessments will enhance the learning environment with our new touch screen boards. Successful completion of practice homework is the key to achievement in Math. This year the students will have an on-line homework video tutor for each lesson! Our lessons will begin with understanding and estimating whole numbers, as well as practicing the order of operations and the properties of numbers. This month will wrap up with decimal operations and understanding them.

In Science, we will be investigating God’s complex and intricate design of how insects and plants interact. We will discuss the appropriate tools needed to investigate the world around us. Following this in-depth study of insects, we will gain knowledge of the life patterns and plans God has for mammals.

In fifth grade we will be studying Old World History, which launches off the year with the beginning of human history, government, and cultures. We’ll begin with understanding the importance of geography and an extended study about the continent of Asia. The text takes us through the ancient history and cultures of today within the countries.

I’m really looking forward to working with you and your child! I know that God has an incredible year in store for us as we team up in prayer and support one another. Thank you for making sacrifices to give your child a Christian education.

God is Good all the time,

            Mrs. Oberle
